Google took an interesting step recently by adding a service called App Licensing to the Android SDK. I haven’t looked at it in detail, but the gist of it is that it’s a license validation system for third party apps. It allows third party apps to check with the Android Marketplace to see if it’s authorized to run on the particular device

It all began with the G1, the very first commercially available Android. And today, we learn that there is a $150 Android based tablet and $99 netbook from Augen to be sold at Kmart. Of course, in between, there have been quite a few dozen more Android devices that have radically changed the mobile landscape.

Google announces licensing service for Android apps

Both Google and developers are probably unhappy with the current copy-protection mechanism that protects apps available in Android Market, so Google is releasing a new licensing service for applications. Created for all paid apps in Android Market (Android 1.5 or newer), the licensing service allows developers to “query the Android Market licensing server to determine the license status of their users.” Google plans to replace the current Android app copy-protection mechanism with the new, safer service in the next few months. Android users don’t dislike their devices quite as much as previous (and inaccurate) reports indicated, apparently. On Monday, the Yankee Group made sure to correct CNN Money’s interpretation of its data. In fact, the earlier CNN Money story said that while 77 percent of iPhone owners said they would buy another iPhone, only 20 percent of Android customers said the same about another Android phone
