Microsoft plants Bing on Google-free Chinese Androids
Mar 12th
Motorola will soon push Microsoft’s Bing search engine onto Android phones in China, after announcing an alliance with the Redmond software giant that will see Bing appear on Androids across the globe.
In the wake of this Moto-Microsoft pact, Google has confirmed with The Reg that it has barred the use of its mobile applications on Android phones from Chinese carriers, leaving the likes of Motorola to use alternatives.
On Thursday morning, Motorola said that before the end of the quarter, it would add a Bing browser bookmark and a Bing search widget to new phones based on Google’s open source OS as well as handsets already in the market. Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it appears that Bing will not be the default provider on the devices’ browser search box.
The pact will also put Microsoft’s Bing Maps service on Motorola phones.
Motorola’s announcement comes amid ongoing confusion over Google’s position in China – and thus Motorola’s relationship with the Mountain View web giant. In mid-January, Google threatened to shutter its China operation in response to an alleged Chinese hack attack on its internal systems, and days later, it said that it would postpone its launch of two Android phones on the Chinese carrier China Unicom – one from Samsung and one from Motorola – saying it would be “irresponsible” to let the launch proceed.
Google says it has made the decision to “no longer” censor results on its Chinese search engine, but it continues to censor results while discussing its position with government authorities.
Yes, Android is open source. But the China Unicom phones would have been branded “with Google” a la the Motorola-Verizon Droid or the T-Mobile-HTC G1, offering tight integration with various Google mobile applications. A Google spokeswoman now tells us the company has postponed “the availability of Google mobile applications on Android devices from operators in China.”
This means that even without the Google brand, Motorola is barred from offering Google applications on its own Android handsets in the country. As Google postponed the launch of its China Unicom phones, Motorola told the world that its Chinese Android phones would allow users to choose their own search provider and that the native Chinese search engine Baidu would be among those on the list.
With its mid-January blog post on the alleged Chinese hack attacks, Google said that “over the next few weeks” it would be discussing “the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all.” That was eight weeks ago, and though Eric Schmidt said yesterday that “something will happen” with the talks “soon,” he said the company had “no timetable” for its discussions.
Last week, in Silicon Valley, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer downplayed the possibility of the company putting Bing on Android phones. “That’s a little more complicated,” he said. “Android without [Google] isn’t Android. We’re going to have to see where the Android market develops.” But just a week later, the Redmond giant has inked a global pact with Motorola on Android.
Asked about the deal, Microsoft merely pointed us back to Motorola’s press release, but as Ballmer put it, Redmond is very much interested in expanded the reach of mobile Bing through strategic partnerships. Microsoft already has inked a deal with US wireless carrier Verizon Wireless that makes Bing the default search engine on certain BlackBerries, and in this case, phone owners are unable to use their browser’s built-in search boxes with anything other than Bing.
Meanwhile, US carrier AT&T has introduced its first Android phone – the Motorola Backflip – and its default search engine is Yahoo!. Like Motorola’s China phones, this is not a Google-branded phone, and the carrier is free to modify the browser search box however it chooses.

The Google Nexus One
Mar 5th
I just recently switched from a T-Mobile G1 to a Google Nexus One and I have to say that I have been completely blown away with the Nexus One. There is just so much to love about this phone that i felt compelled to express my love in list form. With that being said, here are 8, of the many, reasons why I love the Nexus One.
1. Design- The Nexus One is a sleek, beautiful device with a magnificent 3.7″ AMOLED touchscreen display that dominates the front of the phone. The phone is incredibly slim, slightly slimmer than the iPhone 3Gs, and has a nice weight and a sturdy feel. Basically it looks and feels like it’s of the highest quality.
2. Talking- It’s often easy to forget that high-end devices like the Nexus One are actually telephones because they do so much more than just make calls. But the Nexus One is actually a great phone to actually talk on. It feels great in the hand when being held to your ear and the sound on both ends is fantastic. The main reason is that HTC incorporated two microphones into the Nexus One. One for talking and one for noise cancellation. Brilliant and effective.
3. Display- As I mentioned earlier, the Nexus One is packing one of the best displays the you’ll see on a cell phone. 3.7″ of AMOLED brilliance makes watching YouTube, browsing the internet and playing games a joy. The size of the screen is also big enough to make typing on the Nexus One fast, easy and accurate.
4. Live Wallpapers- I know this really doesn’t add anything of great substance to the phone but the Live Wallpapers found on the Nexus One make the homescreen experience more enjoyable. There is just something so cool about being able to make the water ripple just by tapping the screen.
5. Voice Input- Anywhere you can type on the Nexus One, you can talk. Google has brilliantly added a speech-to-text option to Android 2.1 that is surprisingly accurate and makes send quick text messages incredibly easy. I’ve also found that this method is great as a spelling tool when you don’t have access to a dictionary or spellchecker.
6. Camera- I’m going to be blunt and say that the G1 had one of the most useless camera’s that i’ve encountered on a mobile phone. It was slow, blurry and had a total lack of color accuracy. The Nexus One is a huge step in the right direction. The 5MP camera on this phone is top notch. It takes wonderful pictures with full color and a powerful LED flash and the UI includes multiple options to fine tune your picture taking. The video camera also works extremely well and can capture video up to 30 fps.
7. Snapdragon- This phone flies. The page transitions are smooth, the orientation switches seemlessly and videos and games play without a single hiccup. All of this speed and power is because the Nexus One is packing a 1GHZ Snapdragon processor. For those of you who are not techies, the Snapdragon is the baddest processor in the mobile phone world right now and it packs quite the punch. Let’s just say that you won’t notice the processor which is always a good thing.
8. Homescreen Experience- Google totally revamped the homescreen experience for the Nexus One. It features five panes, updated widgets and a new card-like fast navigation system. You can get weather, news, Facebook updates and play music all from your homescreen. Brilliant.
Google G1 Android vs Xperia X1
Mar 5th
With all the buzz surrounding the new Google Android (the G1), you may be wondering what the key differences are between the G1 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Besides a different Internet browser, Android versus Windows Mobile, there are several key aspects that may make or break your final decision as to which Smartphone is the best for you.

One of the hugest selling points of the Google Android is familiarity, because it seems that almost everything Google touches is cased in gold. This is partially the reason why Google seems to do so well and continues to grow, however, there are some components of the Android that do not stand up well against the Xperia X1, so you should do some research before you make the purchase of such a high ticket item.
Right off the bat you will notice that the Xperia has a slightly slimmer design that ultimately weighs less as well, with an overall weight of 145g versus the 159g Android. This is not the only significant downside to the Android, despite its initial glamor shot as a Google innovation; the G1 only has 192MB of RAM while the Xperia X1 by Sony Ericcson offers 256MB of RAM.
While the G1 may offer you many shortcuts and excellent shortcuts to Google and all of its web, audio, image, and video media searches, you are not going to be able to enjoy them properly or efficiently with such slow processing speed. If you like to browse the Internet and have quick access to your records and/or email on the go, you are better off choosing the Xperia X1.
Additionally, the G1 does have a 3.1 megapixel camera, but offers you no flash option, so if you are concerned with the camera features of your Smartphone, once again the better choose is going to be the xperia x1. Even more impressive on the Xperia X1’s behalf, is the fact that the X1 has a resolution of 800X480 pixels so that you can view your photos, video recording, internet pages, and any other multimedia in full definition. Sadly enough, the G1 only offers you the standard 480X320 resolution.
This all can make one start to wonder, so what is the Google holding in that huge mass? Well, it’s not talk time battery life either, as the Xperia battery life is estimated to last up to ten hours, while the Android is estimated to last up to five hours.
So it’s up to you, basically with the Xperia X1 you get the technologically advanced phone for your money, but with the G1, you will get a phone your friends recognize and possible a status tool. The choice is yours!
