The Droid And Exploring Terra Incognita

I love maps. Road Maps, local maps, historical maps, world maps, political maps, geographical maps, and topographical maps. Put out a map and I will look at it. One of my favorite maps is a wall sized map at the New Bedford Whaling National Park which charts the voyages of New Bedford’s whaling fleet. At my house there must be at least two dozen maps of various types as well as any number of map books and atlases. In the past week the kids have found out where Malta is, in what ocean Tristan da Cunha is, and why there are volcanoes in Iceland.
My favorite kind of map however, are those historical maps where the mapmaker is compelled to imagine what unknown lands “look” like. I have in front of me a map from the early 16th century. It fairly accurately depicts Europe, North Africa, and south western Asia…but vast regions of the of the globe are labeled Terra Incognita…or unknown land. The world must have seems mysteriously huge and fascinatingly unknown.
Since the beginning of the 16th century, and even before, we embarked on a campaign to map, chart, and record every nook, crag, and cranny of our world. The world is a lot smaller but I think it may still be unknown and this leads me to my Droid…
I have been saving my pennies and the other day I bought a Droid…its a cell phone with many features, including a web browser, email, and a GPS…Yesterday while playing with the GPS on this thing I discovered something interesting an alarming. Not only does my Droid “know” where I am at…it “knows” where I am at where I am at.
Sitting in the car, while at my ex-wife’s house, I was playing with the Droid’s GPS feature. Not only did it have a map of Bridgewater, it had on its map property lines, and not only was there a flashing blue dot indicating where I was…it indicated where I was parked on the driveway. Later on…this thing was able to trace my movements through my apartment. Big Brother is watching indeed.
Perhaps because of their accuracy, GPS’ have the tendency to keep people on the beaten, well travelled track, away from terra incognita. A GPS will point me to a Dunkin Donuts in Dennis, Massachusetts…but I need to find for myself the mom and pop donut shop with the best sour cream donuts on Earth. A GPS will tell me the fastest way to get to Marshfield…but it won’t tell me that the best way to go is to take the back road that runs along the pond where there are swans.
As small as the world has gotten, it is still mysterious with much that is hidden and unknown. My Droid may help me chart my journey…but its up to me to figure out where to go, what to avoid, how to find the right road, and to find where the good donuts are.

HTC in collaboration with Google a new mobile phone with Android operating system has created. The mobile phone is called “T-Mobile G1″ and is made by a special design, with a large screen that can be pushed to the side to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard with 5 rows.
The mobile phone is the iPhone a strong competitor of Apple. The phone is built on an open-source operating system, like the iPhone, so that both developers and the phoneProducers, users can bring content and applications support. In practice, this means that anyone can build applications for this phone for anyone to buy or simply for free download on the Internet. With the built-in keyboard, it has to navigate easily on the phone on the network and make tasks such as writing e-mails or other documents.
The G1 comes with:

Wi-Fi function
3.2-inch touch screen
Full QWERTY keyboard with 5 rows

I do not like the design very much. I have a little more to work with Google and HTC, but I also think that the software really works well and has some very nice features. The G1 isvery easy to use and you can take some shortcuts and add them directly to your desktop.
The absolute biggest advantage is to accept the possibility of open-source programs, and I predicted this concept will be the future.

Funny thing is that I’m not much of a cell phone user. Or at least I never was before I found out about data phones. My last phone I had for over 2 years and that one I got for free because my wife upgraded her phone. I only use it when someone calls me or I’m
Which is how I got my latest phone. She needed something she could text with and had good email, contacts, and calendar features so she can stay connected with home and work. The touch screen phones didn’t work for her because she has fingernails and you have to use the pads of your fingers to touch not your nails. So she wanted a full pull out keyboard. So she got the Motorolla Cliqe. It also has twitter and facebook integrated so you can stay connected to your social network which she loves.
When we got her phone it was a better deal to upgrade our plan which allowed me to also get a data phone. So I got the cheaper and simpler Google G1 phone which basically has the same features just not quite as nice of a user interface. I have to say this phone is pretty cool. I love the free apps that you can get with it. The pop out full keyboard is fantastic for texting which I have found myself doing more recently and with the number pad on a phone it took forever. Now I can type out full messages in no time. With the built in GPS and google maps you have great navigation and location finding tools. I set up a twitter account and hooked my facebook page up. Now I am more social than I was before. I set up all my email accounts so now I get email notifications when I’m not at my computer. I even setup my Instant Messaging so I can tell when someone is trying to contact me. I LOVE the cool apps that let you take a photo of a bar code and look the product up and give you the cheapest place online and locally to buy it.My only negative thing about these data phones is that the screen is too small to practically surf and read stuff on the web. It is also too small to watch videos or look at digital photos of any quality. But those tasks are better suited for the PC anyway. The other drawback is that the battery drains pretty quickly if you are using all the features. If you just let it idle and only used it as a phone it would be fine but since you are playing with all the apps and touching the screen it quickly kills the battery. I find I have to charge it every day where as my old cell I could go a week without charging it.
I’m getting a lot of grief for being so into my new phone when I always said I didn’t care about a new cell phone. But I love gadgets and this is a fun one.
