Edwin: Android app you can talk to… and it will answer: ”
Google Android has built-in speech recognition, which means you can translate speech to text in many apps. But Edwin is one of the few that will talk back. For instance, you can ask Edwin the time, and it will tell you. Ask it for tomorrow’s fo
recast and a computerized voice will read it to you. You can even ask it to translate words or sentences from one language to another or to define or spell words for you.
Edwin also works as an app launcher and controller for your phone’s hardware. For instance, you can tell it to put your phone in airplane mode or turn the Bluetooth on or off. Or you can tell it to open the camera application.
Like most speech recognition apps, Edwin isn’t perfect. Or maybe it’s just my voice that isn’t perfect. Sometimes it misunderstands commands, and while you’re supposed to be able to open applications by saying “launch X” or “open X,” I’ve found that it works a lot better with “open.” But overall, it’s a pretty nifty little application, and best of all it’s available as a free download.
After the break is a video showing how Edwin responds when I ask it for the time, temperature, nearest movie theater, and other information.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini / Mini Pro review

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini / Mini Pro review: ”
In a smartphone market saturated with 3.5-inch and larger displays, Sony Ericsson reckons there’s still a little place for petite packages. Enter the Xperia X10 Mini (E10i) and Mini Pro (U20i) — both direct descendants of the beastly X10 Android 1.6 handset. Apart from the Pro’s slide-out keyboard, removable battery, and positioning of various features, the two Minis are otherwise internally identical — same processor, same camera, and same screen. So can these cute baby form factors offer more than just some palm-cuddling time? Can we get a decent smartphone performance out of them? Follow us after the break to find out.

Nexus One sees red, nearly doubles battery life? (video)

Nexus One sees red, nearly doubles battery life? (video): ”
These five Nexus One smartphones may seem to have defects, but there’s actually nothing wrong with their AMOLED screens — the funky colors are an attempt to improve battery life by turning off unnecessary sub-pixel LEDs. Hooking up his handset to an industrial power meter, Android engineer Jeff Sharkey discovered a blood-red screen drew 42 percent less current than full color — the least of any combination by far — purportedly doubling the effective battery life of the phone. While you’re probably not going to be able to test the requisite software patch for yourself unless you’re mildly familiar with Google code, you’ll find a video of the crimson wonder after the break to fuel your dreams of a eyestrain-free astronomy cheat sheet… and Android bullfighting, of course.

Download Google Chrome Mobile Phone Web Browser For Nokia Smartphone
Jul 4th
After the firefox now the fastest browser on Earth Google Chrome gets ported to Nokia N900. The Google Chrome aka Chromium is not officialy ported by Google. This version is based on Debian 32 bit release. It works great and the flash content works very well too. The porting is done by Jacekowski. The browser have some small bugs. Hope there will be a more stable version soon. Read after the break for install instructions and download link.
Why Chromium? Well, most websites are optimized for mobile phones, meaning to say you are likely served with a stripped down version of the actual layout. As for me, I prefer to read blogs in its actual layout. This is where Chromium comes in, it has the ability to display the entire webpage without modifying the codes.
Download and check out the ACID test results, and follow instalation instructions :
- This packages don’t work with app manager – you have to install them using dpkg in console
- Chromium should work with libxss from extras-devel repo or libxss from here
- Note: If you use extras-devel repo version you will have to use some –force when installing chromium )
Installing Through X-terminal in N900 :
- Download both files from the link above to root directory in Nokia N900 then
- Type root
- Type cd /home/user/MyDocs/ dpkg -i name-of-the-lib-file.deb
- dpkg -i name-of-the-chromefile.deb

HTC Hero gets Android 2.1 update across Europe (update: nope, not 2.1 yet): ”
It’s been a long, painful, drawn-out process, but it looks like we’re finally closing in on getting everyone with an HTC Hero around the globe covered with Eclair. The company’s European outpost has just posted some details on its Android 2.1 over-the-air update for the 2100MHz 3G Hero sold in most of the continent (including separate builds for units in Nordic countries, Greece, and Ireland), so this should quite a lot of brewing discontent — just in time for owners to develop a raging case of Froyo envy, that is. C’est la vie; time for a Legend, right?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We’ve heard from our friends at CoolSmartPhone that this is just another minor update, amazingly — not the 2.1 build that other Hero owners are enjoying. What gives, HTC?
Update 2: Gizmodo has an direct quote from HTC on the two-part (the first of which seems to have already begun), end of June release. See it after the break.

Nexus One gets USB host driver from a dude with an oscilloscope (video)

Nexus One gets USB host driver from a dude with an oscilloscope (video): ”
For Sven Killig, running Android 2.2 wasn’t enough. No sir, this dude wanted even more power for his Nexus One, so he went ahead and penned a few lines of code that have allowed his Googlephone to act as a USB host. As a result, he can now do cutting edge stuff like plugging in USB keyboards and webcams, as well as more useful things like watching movies off USB sticks or connecting to a monitor via a DisplayLink USB-to-DVI adapter. All these features are demonstrated in the video after the break, and you’ll find the downloadable binaries at the source — Sven expects them to work on Android 2.1 as well.

Nexus One runs Windows 3.11, possibly the saddest thing we’ve seen all day (video)
May 20th
In a volatile Android ecosystem where bigger and better phones pop up every week, your Nexus One might be feeling a little obsolete. Frankly, there’s hardly a better way to cheer it up than by installing an operating system that’s a little more its speed. In the finest DOSBox tradition, one gentleman recently imbued his Googlephone with Windows 3.11, by far our favorite 1993 Microsoft OS. Realizing the futility of getting it to do anything — ah, memories — he set about crafting a step-by-step guide for you to do the same. If you care to give his misery company, you’ll find instructions at our source link; if not, don your rose-tinted glasses and peep the video after the break.
