Cellular South’s HTC Hero Upgraded to Android 2.1: ”
Some of you Cellular South customers were disappointed that the regional carrier missed their “first half of 2010″ window by nearly a month now, but a few weeks never hurt anyone. You can now download your upgrade to Android 2.1 for manual installation (sorry, folks: no OTA to be had here).
Be sure to stop by Cellular South’s Facebook page to get instructions on how to apply the update that you can get here. [Note]: The upgrade includes MMS support, but you must add MMS to your account online for $5.99 per month. Also note that you can have the update applied in-store, but you’ll incur a charge of $15.

CyanogenMod Froyo ROMs hit RC for Nexus One, Dream, Magic (updated)

CyanogenMod Froyo ROMs hit RC for Nexus One, Dream, Magic (updated): ”
For those of you patiently (or not so much) waiting for Cyanogen and Team Douche to release a semi-official Android 2.2 ROM, it’s time to get flashing. CyanogenMod-6.0.0 RC1 was posted up early this morning, with builds for the Nexus One, Dream and Magic, which should cover a good many of us. You can snag the new builds in the usual places, including the CM Nexus One and D/M forums, XDA Developers (N1, D/M) and our favorite, ROM Manager.
For the noobs out there, the CyanogenMod series of ROMs are custom built from the official Android Open Source Project files by trained professionals (professional somethings, anyway), tested and released to the masses. (Check out the full changelog here.) We swear by ‘em, and you should, too. [Cyanogen]
Update: A new CM Droid ROM is now in ROM Manager and the other usual places. Huzzah!

Android Quick-App: Saint
Jul 9th
When it comes to Android apps, we love zombies. And loud music. And the two are combined in the Smudgeware game called Saint ($1.99). It’s kind of a reboot of the old Smash TV game. You’ve got dual thumb joysticks. The one on the left moves the Saint; the one on the right directs shooting toward Freddy Krueger-glad zombies and Hulk-looking, well, hulks. (And the joystick positions are configurable.) Guns, rockets, lasers — basically anything you’d want for a few minutes of mindless gaming. And it’s got killer background music thanks to Coldwater Tragedy (the developer’s son’s band). Anyhoo, give it a look-see after the break.

AppBrain introduces Fast Web Install — install Android apps over the web

AppBrain introduces Fast Web Install — install Android apps over the web: ”
I admit, I’m an AppBrain fanboy. Using a phone to dig and search through all the 68,000+ apps things in the Android Market is enough to drive anyone insane, so I don’t do it unless I have to. Today, using AppBrain just got better — you can now install apps direct to your device, right from the AppBrain website. Yes, just like the ‘coming feature’ from Google that Vic Gundutra demoed at Google I/O, without the wait. And it works on all modern versions of Android (1.5 and higher). Hit the break for a quick how-to and a video of it in action.

Xperia X10 gets an update, still waiting on Android 2.1

Xperia X10 gets an update, still waiting on Android 2.1: ”

The good news: An update is rolling out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as we speak. The bad news: Nope, it’s still stuck on Android 1.6. Here’s what you are getting, though:
This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and responsiveness of Xperia X10. For example, there are speed improvements in messaging tasks and camera UI. In addition we add a free back up and restore application so you’ll never lose your settings and information. In selected markets, PlayNow™ with premium apps and games will also be added.
Better than nothing, we guess. But as we talk more and more about devices starting to get Froyo, the wait for Eclair becomes that much harder to stomach. [Sony Ericsson Product Blog]

An Xperia X10 Mini commercial that dances around the phone
May 13th
An Xperia X10 Mini commercial that dances around the phone: ”
Here’s Sony Ericsson’s latest ad spot on the Xperia X10 Mini (which just cleared the FCC!) and while we applaud the amazing finger dancing choreography, we just don’t get it. Sure, fingers dancing on a table can look great on screen but it does nothing to show off the actual features of the phone. Wouldn’t it be much more effective if the fingers danced on the phone’s screen, showing off its features, than around it? So why not show off the Xperia X10 Mini’s biggest appeal, its portability, instead?
What do you guys think? Should we relax and enjoy the “fun-ness” of the ad spot? Or did Sony Ericsson miss once again? [via androidandme]

Official Google I/O Android app now available
May 12th
Official Google I/O Android app now available: ”
We’d love to take all of you with us next week to the Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco, but you know how much it costs to check luggage these days. The good news is we’ll be there to bring back all the latest Android news (including the likely possibility of seeing Froyo and Flash make their official debut). And you can follow along, if you want, with Google’s official I/O Android application. Schedules, maps, the works. It’s a must-have if you’re going, and cool to play with if you’re kibitzing from the sidelines. More screen shots after the break. [Market link]
