Google Nexus One review: Firstborn (PDA, Android, tech, news, report, review, "iPhone Repair"

All droids are equal but some droids are more equal than others. Google it. You’ll get the Nexus One. There are around 50 smartphones and tablets running Android today. That’s right, out of all the offspring they fathered with the Open Handset Alliance, Google finally have one to proudly call their own.

What does it mean? Well, not that the ones we’ve seen so far are some poor half-blood droids but the Nexus One is supposed to be THE thing. For one, it’s the first Snapdragon-powered Android and it shows. The Nexus One is wickedly fast. The WVGA touchscreen is a treat to look at and it’s only the second AMOLED display to find on an Android handset. D1 video is sure to sweeten the deal too, and perhaps so will the Live Wallpapers.

Awash in rumors well before launch, the Google Nexus One was officially revealed in January 2010 and it became available right after the unveiling event. Of course, the first units were to sell only in a very limited number of countries (UK, Singapore and Hong Kong).
Anyway Google are to start shipping their Nexus One through various carriers across Europe, starting with Vodafone this spring. That’s about the time when Verizon subscribers will be getting a CDMA version of the device. Google have a phone to sell, so it’s a fair guess they’ll be seeing to it that everyone can have it. Now, will everyone want to? Let’s see.

Key features:

Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA support
3.7″ 16M-color capacitive AMOLED touchscreen of WVGA (480x 800 pixel) resolution
Android OS v2.1 with kinetic scrolling and pinch zooming
Slim profile and some great build quality
Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1 GHz processor
512 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM
5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geo-tagging
D1 (720 x 480 pixels) video recording @ 24fps
Wi-Fi and GPS with A-GPS
microSD slot, bundled with a 4GB card
Accelerometer and proximity sensor
Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
Trackball navigation
Main disadvantages
No DivX and XviD video playback
No Flash support for the web browser (update is on the way)
No smart and voice dialing
Somewhat clumsy camera interface and limited camera features
No dedicated camera shutter key
Non hot-swappable memory card
No FM radio
The soft keys below the display are somewhat unresponsive
The Google phone has HTC fingerprints all over it. We just had the pleasure of the HTC Desire at the WMC and we quite liked what we saw. There’s no reason to expect less of the Nexus One – quite the contrary in fact, a little bit of nepotism only seems right.

The Google Nexus One won’t come with the HTC Sense of course, but who would’ve expected so! The Android 2.1 novelties will keep you busy enough anyway, but the first thing on everyone’s mind will be: Is there any special Google treatment the Nexus One is getting?
The latest of the Androids is in a way the firstborn, for all the good and the bad of it. It’s all in the name really: a name that will open doors but that carries a certain obligation too.
Will the Nexus One raise above its droid siblings or will it get lost in the crowd? That’s the kind of questions we’ll be trying to answer on the pages to come. You’re welcome to join: let’s see what the Google Nexus One is made of (and packed in, as well). Search Engine Submission – AddMe

Google Translator Phone

[Google] is developing software for the first phone capable of translating foreign languages almost instantly – like the Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

By building on existing technologies in voice recognition and automatic translation, Google hopes to have a basic system ready within a couple of years.

Google’s head of translation services, Franz Och, is quoted saying “We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years’ time … Clearly, for it to work smoothly, you need a combination of high-accuracy machine translation and high-accuracy voice recognition, and that’s what we’re working on.”

Gobandroid

When i got my first Android Phone ~2 months ago there was no goban for android yet – but i wantet some – so i started the opensource project gobandroid ( goban + android ;-)
I got a lot of feedback, that’s one of the reasons why i am writing this blogpost. First of all thanx to the first contributor Ruth Hinckley aka Lironah for with first images ( i started with single color circles and lines ;-) See the difference:

Second thanx to the potential contributor shay raikin who wants to implement gnugo !-)
And last but not least thanx to all the mails with bugreports/ideas and greetinx.
There are not much features yet but even with these little featureset some users are just happy with it e.g. to write down games and save them to SGF.
Tonight I implemented something new – the skins are now saved to SD-Card with applications called gobandroid skinstaller ( skin + installer ;-) – These applications uninstall after they did the job of copying images to the sd-card – so there is not much Application Space is needed. Application Space is actually a big issue on android at this time. I have a lot of space on sd-card but lack space where i can install application. This needs to be fixxed on android but until then I’m going this workaround.

here is the code of gobandroid: http://github.com/ligi/gobandroid

the code is GPL licenced

and here is the code of the installer ( perhaps the uninstalling or the resources to SD-Card part is interesting for someone ) : http://github.com/ligi/gobandroid-skinstaller-lironah/

Do you let history guide you? Or do you set out to change it?

Let’s see here…..

1. I just ordered parts for the CA18 for the S13 from Hell. Thank you FujiiSPL for all the help thus far, and throughout the rest of the monkeyfuck of a build.

2. How is it the closer we get to February, the colder it gets? Its ironic, unfortunate, and irritating. However, my car did get washed today, so I could care a little less I guess.

3. THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS!!! Once again, Manning choked again, like he has done since college. WHO DAT SAY THEY GON’ BEAT DEM SAINTS?!

4. This marks the first time in 6.25 years that I am actually attempting to make progress on that deity forsaken flat black embarrassment to the 240 scene. Hahahaha I still love that my car looks like shit, especially when I park it next to all the douchenozzles who think their 20 year old secretarymobile is soooooooooo much better than everyone elses. Yes everyone at Ziptied. com, I’m looking, pointing, and laughing at you. Seriously, who the hell gets conceited over some shitbox nissan concocted over 20 years ago just because they dumped 10k into it (way more than these things are worth) and put it into walls drifting on a regular basis??

My car is a ruthless, horrid, disgusting, rust infested, vomit inducing pile of good ol’ parts bin abortion engineering, and it will soon have the underdog of ancient nissan **laughs* technology under the hood. So fuck you and the SR/KA/RB that somehow got you here.

Especially the KA. You should feel lucky if you got somewhere without breaking down halfway.

I know I talk alot of shit about the KA24DE, but I swear I have good reason to. I have never come across an engine that has caused me more problems. Even BEFORE I started drifting (which was a good year, year and a half after I got the car) I was getting stranded all over the place. I’ve been through two of those boat anchors. My 1984 Cutlass Supreme had the 231 cubic inch Buck “Even-fire” 3.8L V6 in it, and it LIT ITSELF ON FIRE due to a fuel leak from the back of the carburetor, and STILL STARTED RIGHT UP THE NEXT DAY. I had days when my fucking KA couldn’t even GET ME UP THE STREET TO THE GROCERY STORE! Either way, fuck that engine.

To those who have had luck with it, more power to you, but I’m done walking on eggshells just to drive my fucking shitbox.
Moving on……

Ever buy someone something super awesome for their birthday and then say, “Damn, that’s-ah pretty freakin-ah sweet-ah! I need one now!!”??? I just did.

Das Lau’s birthday was the 3rd. I bought her a Google G1 phone, because in hindsight we were fucking idiots for getting the abortion known as a Sidekick, when the guy at Tmobile tried his little heart out to sell us on the G1 instead. Alas, we weren’t sold then, but good god are we now.

So I came into contact on Zilvia with a dude who had one for cheap, with a charger. It arrived today, and deity fucking dammit do I want to keep this for myself.

Yes Yes Yes I know she’s an awesome wife….but c’mon…..just this once?? Please?

OH ALRIGHT. FINE. I’LL GIVE HER THE DAMNED PRESENT. Sheesh. Tough crowd.

But I now need one for myself. Partially because I am portugese and therefore being unnecessarily competitive over stupid shit is in my blood, and because Sidekicks are fucking trash and this phone is doooooooooooooooooooooope-ah!

Maybe she’ll be awesome and re-gift it to me……now?

Meanwhile, up town…..

My band is pretty damned cool. I just wish we had some recorded music to post everywhere on the internetz0rz for people to indulge in.

Hopefuly we have our first show next month.

I miss being on stage. I truly do. In my humble (read: totally more awesome than yours) opinion, it is the greatest feeling in the world (well almost better than getting the best head/dome/brain in the world from the hottest female ever), and I’ve missed it for years now. Even when my old bands used to play really small poorly set up shows (battle of the bands and such), it was still fucking B. I loved the energy of being up there, the adrenaline of playing what we had worked so hard as a collective to create for the masses to hear.

Yeah, it was pretty fucking cool, and even though the past couple years haven’t been so great for me musically, I’m glad I stuck it out, and I hope that with the support of my awesome collective of friends, this current band takes me where the others didn’t. And I don’t mean that as a FUCK YOU to my old bands, I just think that with each musical endeavour, people strive to make it one step further in the SCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNEE than the last time around.

Capische?

Also, I miss driving my Bug. Its just way too fun. Yes, it has no heat. Yes, it BARELY has 60hp. Yes its old and goofy. But fucking-A dudettes, its pretty rad. Just to hop in it and cruise with nowhere speacial to go? EPIC SAUCE. Beautiful day with nothing to do? DUNNA NUNNA NUNNA NUNNA NUNNA NUNNA NUNNA NUNNA BUG TIME! BUG TIME!

And on that bright yellow as fucking hell note, I’m out.

The early termination fee of Wireless Phone Contracts

Have you ever seen a contract to join a certain type of service? If so, then you have probably encountered the term, termination charges. Service industries such as mobile phone service and pay-TV fees, generally with the termination or early termination fees, as they are better known.

The process usually works this way. A person buys mobile phone service from a specific mobile operator. He or she may be required to sign a two-yearContract to the use of the service. Now that a $ 200 contract fee for the event could provide that the customer breaks the contract or will not comply with them.

However, the introduction of these termination charges by consumer interest groups has been criticized. These fees prevent users from migrating to the high-quality services so that they are labeled as anti-competitive. A lot of people prefer to stick to their old network, instead of paying a substantial fee to move to another network, or Mobile phone makers. More and more people on this very unfair practice and it seems that their complaints have been finally recognized.

The shouting and the disputes about the unfairness of early termination charges in mobile phone contracts have produced positive changes in the last few years. Verizon Wireless was the first airline to give in to when it announced that it will prorate its early termination fee. AT & T, followed> 'S lead, Verizon and other carriers, namely, T-Mobile and Sprint, have also decided that they begin prorating their ETF in the first half of next year.

Well, what is a prorated early termination fee? The customer will still pay a fee for the abrupt termination of the mobile phone contract. However, decreases the amount as the decision moves closer to the contract prematurely, the contract end date to end. This means that a customer will no longer be forced to pay the originalFee if he decides to terminate the contract.

Here is a list of the current termination fee for every major cell phone carriers:

Alltel: $ 200 per phone line

AT & T Prorated

Sprint: $ 200 per phone line (the pro-rata in the next year)

T-Mobile: $ 200 per phone line (the pro-rata in the next year)

Verizon: Prorated

So far, Alltel does not have any announcements regarding their respective shares in the ETF. However, it may lose customers if it remains as the only major mobileMobile network operators, a non-prorated early termination fee for next year. It would be logical to assume that the companies are also the examples for other wireless networks to follow in order to keep their customers happy. Finally, the mobile industry highly competitive and any shift in policy or program of a cell phone carrier can loyal fans in search of a better alternative is to send.
