Your first Eclipse RAP application
Sep 1st
3.1. Create Project
Create a new plugin project “sawan.modi.rap.first” via File -> New -> Project -> Plug-in Development -> Plug-in Project. Perform the following selection.

Select the “RAP Hello World” template and press “Finish”.

Select your “MANIFEST.MF”, right click on it, select Run-as-> Rap Application.
This should start your first RAP application.

Congratulations! You have your first Eclipse RAP application running.
Eclipse RAP requires an entrypoint similar to “org.eclipse.core.runtime.applications” for Eclipse RCP applications. The entrypoint for Eclipse RAP is defined via “org.eclipse.rap.ui.workbench.entrypoint”.
View your Entrypoint via the entension “org.eclipse.rap.ui.workbench.entrypoint” in the file “MANIFEST.MF” . Please note that the parameter “default” is used in your runtime configuration of RAP.
.
Create now a view. Select therefore in MANIFEST.MF the tab extension and add the extension point “org.eclipse.ui.views”. Add then add the view with the id “sawan.modi.rap.first.View”. The procedure is the same as for Eclipse RCP application which is described in Eclipse RCP Application.
Create the following view class.
package sawan.modi.rap.first;
import org.eclipse.swt.SWT;import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite;import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Label;import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Text;import org.eclipse.ui.part.ViewPart;
public class View extends ViewPart {
public static final String ID = "sawan.modi.rap.first.View";
@Override public void createPartControl(Composite parent) { Label label = new Label(parent, SWT.NONE); label.setText("This is my label"); Text text = new Text(parent, SWT.NONE); text.setText("Input"); }
@Override public void setFocus() {
}
}
Add the view to the perspective by changing Perspective.java to the following.
package sawan.modi.rap.first;
import org.eclipse.ui.IPageLayout;import org.eclipse.ui.IPerspectiveFactory;
/*** Configures the perspective layout. This class is contributed* through the plugin.xml.*/public class Perspective implements IPerspectiveFactory {
public void createInitialLayout(IPageLayout layout) { String editorArea = layout.getEditorArea(); layout.setEditorAreaVisible(false);
layout.addStandaloneView(View.ID, false, IPageLayout.LEFT, 0.25f, editorArea);
}}
Run your application and see your new view in actions.
Eclipse RAP supports most of the API JFace and Eclipse RCP support. If you want to learn how you can extend your Eclipse RAP application you can review Eclipse RCP App.
Of course Eclipse RAP does only support a subset of these API (but this is increasing every release) so the best way of exploring it is to build your application and see which API are available.
The Android Phone Available in the USA and Canada
Aug 28th
by William Grant
There are many android phones available throughout the world. Many of them have not appeared in North America, however. The mobile phones using this OS in the US and Canada are found mostly locked into a contract with particular carriers.
Low-end and Midrange Android Phones
Many individuals over look the lower end Android phones but anyone that desires a a smart phone on a budget might consider purchasing one of these phones. These phones range from android 1.0 to android 1.5
The Dream G1 is the first android operation phone to be released. This release was achieved on October 22, 2008 and while they aren’t as easy to find currently as the more up-to-date phones they are a definitely bargain at their price range. The Dream G1 is an HTC phone that is available on T-mobile’s network.
The Magic MyTouch 3G is an Android phone that is also available from HTC. It was initially released in May of 2009 and comes with the android 1.5 OS. The carriers that allow this phone for usage are T-mobile, Vodafone, and Orange (UK). This is also a lower priced smart phone with many smart functions that are considered vital in current models. Just like the Dream G1 this phone comes will a pull out qwerty Keyboard.
The HTC Hero carried by SPRINT is one of the most remarked upon smart phones in North America to date. It utilizes the HTC sense UI architecture which some labeled as android to the next level when it was first released back in October of 2009.
The LG Eve is one of the most sought after phones in Canada currently due to the exceptionally low price for locked in service. Rogers of Canada is the locked in carrier of the mobile device currently and many individuals see this as a good thing. While all other smart phones listed with the android 1.5 operating system are typically one hundred to two hundred dollars with a locked in contract this phone is notable in that it sells its locked in version for only forty nine dollars Canadian.
Recently Released High-end Android Phones
Motorola’s Droid Milestone is one of the most talked about phones in existence. The hype surrounding it before its release caused a great deal of rumor and intrigue to be manufactured. Verizon has this particular phone locked down via contract and it has maintained its popularity since November of 2009. The Droid is the phone that managed to invade many people’s minds and convince the individuals that were sitting on the fence to purchase a smart phone in the first place due to an interesting ad campaign. The Droid was known primarily for having the first stock version of android 2.0 available on any system. As many know Verizon has this
The Samsung Moment, on the Sprint network, is considered a solid mid-range phone that currently comes with the android 1.5 architecture. It is included in the high-end section of this information article solely because it is slated to upgrade to version 2.0 of android in the next few months. This will mean that an affordable solution to the smart phone community will be available with close to current programming technology.
The Eris crafted by HTC and released in November of 2009 uses what is known as the HTC Sense UI architecture that many consider a notable side step of the typical android OS. The operating system version known as “cupcake” makes itself known on this device and for many individuals in North America this is the most purchased smart phone option. This smart phone is carried by Verizon and can be found in most upperscale electronics shops and all Verizon stores.
Some consider the Google Nexus One to be the current Holy Grail of smart phone technology. This mobile device is manufactured by HTC and was the first cell phone in existence to be released with the android 2.1 operating system. This meant that technologically it was cutting edge in comparison to its closest rivals and business partners. As a Google phone it is completely unlocked primarily with the option for carriers to have locked in contracts to be available as more of them join up. Currently T-mobile carries the Device in the US with Vodafone and Verizon expected to join in shortly or to reformat their pricing plan as they go along.
No matter what smart phone option seems best for people there is still one key thing to take into account. It isn’t the bells and whistles of the phone but how and where the owner can use it. 3G connectivity is spotty with many smart phones and the best purchase isn’t always the lowest price. The best purchase is a phone that can be used frequently in the area the owner will be primarily living in. Luckily there are many slated to be released in North America in 2010. The numbers some individuals cite seem to relate to at least fifty being available from a wide variety of companies.

Google’s Android leads US smartphones GOOG (VIDEO)
Aug 4th
www.StockMarketFunding.com Google’s Android leads US smartphones GOOG (VIDEO) Smartphones running Google’s (GOOG.O) Android software were the top seller among consumers in the United States in the second quarter, industry tracker NPD said on Wednesday. Android accounted for one-third of all smartphones purchased in the April-June period, with Research in Motion’s (RIM.TO) BlackBerry sliding to second place for the first time since 2007. BlackBerry lost nine percentage points of market share, falling to 28 percent. On Tuesday, RIM unveiled a new touchscreen device as the company tries to reinvigorate its image with consumers. Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) iPhone was in third place with a 22 percent share. Android is available on smartphones from a number of different manufacturers. NPD said Motorola’s (MOT.N) Droid was the best-selling Android handset in the second quarter among US consumers, followed by HTC’s (2498.TW) Droid Incredible and EVO 4G. Google said recently that 160000 Android phones were activated each day during the second quarter, up from 65000 in the first quarter. Smartphone unit prices averaged $143 in the April-June quarter, down 9 percent from a year ago. Google’s Android leads US smartphones GOOG (VIDEO)
I Have No Use for a Protocol Droid
Aug 4th
A byproduct (and quite a delightful one) of getting a job is the substantially increased disposable income. Over the years, I’ve been using the same phone and the same iPod. I’ve gone without a fun little GPS for my tiny little car. I’ve had a bulky low-res camera. I never had a video camera of any kind. However, with money in hand, I’ve moved into the modern age with one fell swoop. Ladies and gentlemen, I purchased the new Droid X. (The “X” makes it sound sexy)
As an avid Star Trek fan, I’ve longed to have my own tricorder. For the uninitiated, the tricorder is the little handheld device that the characters could use to scan for lifeforms, spaceships, and plot devices masquerading as energy clouds. It also had access to limitless information. On one occasion, Mr. Spock found newspaper articles about one woman in the 1930s… while he was trapped in the 1930s thanks to a friendly sentient time portal. The thing was a miracle device… or so I thought.
Then I got to see the Droid in action. The damn thing puts the tricorder to shame. Kirk could have bested the Gorn in two minutes if he’d had a Droid in his pocket. I haven’t yet figured out how to use my Droid to scan for lifeforms, but I’m betting there’s an app for that. I already found an app that identifies the constellations in the sky based on how I hold my Droid. For instance, if I point my phone at the ground, the Droid will show me what’s in the sky on the other side of the Earth straight at that point. Another app will actually allow me to speak in English and have the phone repeat what I just said in another language. That’s right, bitches. It’s a universal translator. Eat my shit, Spock! It may not translate Klingon, but it’s damn close.
The Droid comes with a flashlight, a GPS, 16GB of storage, an HD camcorder with an HDMI adapter, a camera, Pandora radio, and automatic connections to my GMail and Facebook accounts. There might even be a blowjob app in there somewhere if I poke around a bit.
Lest you think I’m starting to sound like one giant advertisement for the Droid X (though I would be willing to accept a handsome fee from Verizon if they’d like me to do so), there is a problem with my Droid…. I can’t see a damn thing on it!!
After the first few hours of orgasmic use, I noticed that my Droid started to flicker on the bottom third of the screen. These fuzzy black bars/lines would distort most of the visible field. It looked exactly like this:
Yeah, not easy to use that way. Now I bet you’re wondering, “How did you find a picture of your exact malfunction?” Well, it turns out that I’m not alone. This week, Verizon released the following memo:
“Verizon Wireless and Motorola are aware of a very small number of DROID X units that have experienced a flickering or banding display. Motorola has resolved the issue and is continuing to ship the phones. Any consumer who experiences a flickering or banding display should contact a Motorola customer support center or Verizon Wireless.”
Verizon estimates that no more than 1/10 of 1% of the Droid Xs were released with this malfunction. Apparently I just lucked into getting the seizure inducing version of the Droid. Why can’t I beat the odds on the lottery?
I took my defective Droid back to the Verizon store, and they were only too happy to replace my flickering Droid with a pristine fully-functional one… except that they were out of stock. So in two days I will have my pristine fully-functional Droid shipped to me. In the meantime, if you try to call me, I may not push the right button to answer because I can’t see the right fucking button. I’m glad I have an epic boner for technological gadgets because otherwise this would really sour me on the inevitable development of Skynet.

“You, I suppose you’re programmed for etiquette and protocol.”
“Protocol? Why, it’s my primary function, sir. I am well-versed in all the customs–”
“I have no need for a protocol droid.”
“Of course you haven’t, sir. Not in an environment such as this. That is why I have been programmed in–”
“What I really need is a droid who understands the binary language of moisture vaporators.”
“Vaporators? Sir, my first job was programing binary load lifters very similar to your vaporators in most respects.”
