iPhone : Find a Location Google Map by Bookmarks

If you know you’re going to need to look up an address several times, you might find it useful to
bookmark it for quick access. Doing this is easy.

Adding Bookmarks

After you look up an address, you’ll see a red pin with a black box above it, marking your address. Inside the black display box is a blue circle with a white arrow inside. Tap the
blue arrow to see the Info screen associated with that address. From this screen, you can do all sorts of useful Google Maps things, but right now all we’re concerned with is the Add to Bookmarks
button. To add the current address as a bookmark, just tap the Add to Bookmarks button.
Now you can give a name to your bookmark to make it easier to find. For example, I’ve
bookmarked my home address in Google Maps and called it simply, Home.

Find a Bookmarked Address

To quickly look up a bookmarked address in Google Maps, tap the blue Bookmark icon on the
right of the search box. The Bookmarks screen will slide up from the bottom of the screen with
your list of bookmarked addresses . If instead you see the Recents or
Contacts screen, tap the Bookmarks button on the bottom left of the screen. Tap the bookmark

Using Android without Google (part 1)

As magicfab on identi.ca requested, I’m starting a journal of my experience using Android without Google’s proprietary apps.

I own an HTC Eris phone which originally came with Android 1.5. A few months ago a firmware was released by a 3rd party which allows users to gain root on their phone (about time) and I’ve been experimenting with this since. My primary interests were removing HTC’s “Sense” UI so I could use a different soft keyboard and removing the backdoors HTC, Verizon, and Google installed in the phone.

After some disturbing problems with the VanillaDroid firmware, I switched to CyanogenEris 3.0 last week. Not only did this new build not come with HTC’s Sense, thanks to Google hitting them with a threatening DMCA letter, the firmware came without Google’s apps either. This includes GMail, GTalk, Google Maps and Market.

Everything works on the firmware except for USB tethering (which is a feature of the firmware). I started by using the browser to download the Barcode Scanner and then used that to install other apps via QR code:

The Foursquare app I was previously using refuses to install (likely because it depends on Google Maps app) and I haven’t figured out how to install the dvorak keyboard add-on to soft keyboard.

I have the standard Android Contacts app, but without Google it does not sync to my Google contacts. I plan to remove my contacts from Google and write a small app that provides ContactsProvider2 via XMPP in an effort to decentralize and federate contact syncing.

I found the web version of GMail superior to the old app, though I do miss the Google Maps app (there are various OpenStreetMaps alternatives but they don’t have the same features). The biggest thing I miss is the GTalk app, though its pitiful as far as XMPP clients go and we should be able to do a lot better.

Most importantly, my phone is now 99% free software with only a few of HTC’s drivers left to be reverse engineered. Even for an advertising company Google is really stretching the truth when they call Android “open source” – but it should be an attainable goal.

Places Directory app for Android

I just stumbled upon this app and was quite amazed. I had recently blogged about Sherpa, but the Places Directory app for Android is so much better.

“As the name implies, Places Directory allows you to browse nearby places in categories like Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Hotels and Banks. You’ll see distance and directions to the destination, and if you tap on the listing, we’ll show ratings and photos. You can also call the business or view its location on Google Maps.”

Android Application Developer Can Develop Smart Phone Mobile Applications

The Google Android is a software stack for mobile phone devices that includes an operating system, key applications and middleware. It is based on open source solutions, particularly Linux Kernel, and it provides an easy and user-friendly integration with other Google services, such as Google Maps, shopping and Google search features.

The Android software development kit (SDK) includes a comprehensive set of tools for the Android application developer like a debugger, libraries, a handset emulator that is based on QEMU, sample code, documentation and tutorials.

With the great built-in features of Google’s Android SDK, an Android application developer has immense flexibility and opportunity to develop diverse smart phone mobile apps.

This not only provides the opportunity for technology companies to cash in, but also creates money making prospects for individual entrepreneurs from various industries. Whether it’s pharmaceuticals, sales automation, games, entertainment, location based services or any sort of utility applications, the Android platform has you covered.

Google’s Android platform has made developers across the globe very happy. That is because an Android application developer team has the toolkit and the technology to provide mobile cellphone software application users with an enhanced mobile experience.

Users are looking for high quality and cutting edge applications, while developers are looking at cost effective ways to provide them with what they need. Because the Android platform is open-source, costs associated with development are a fraction of that of closed-source platforms. Using Google’s Android platform is a win-win for developers and consumers.
