Nexus One sees red, nearly doubles battery life? (video)

Nexus One sees red, nearly doubles battery life? (video): ”
These five Nexus One smartphones may seem to have defects, but there’s actually nothing wrong with their AMOLED screens — the funky colors are an attempt to improve battery life by turning off unnecessary sub-pixel LEDs. Hooking up his handset to an industrial power meter, Android engineer Jeff Sharkey discovered a blood-red screen drew 42 percent less current than full color — the least of any combination by far — purportedly doubling the effective battery life of the phone. While you’re probably not going to be able to test the requisite software patch for yourself unless you’re mildly familiar with Google code, you’ll find a video of the crimson wonder after the break to fuel your dreams of a eyestrain-free astronomy cheat sheet… and Android bullfighting, of course.

Jul 2nd
it has only been a few days since a new build of Android 2.2 Froyo became available for Nexus One users, but now we can confirm that Google has released a new build of Froyo, which is available to download manually as well as OTA on your handset.
As reported from Engadget, Google has made the new build, FRF91 available to download now. According to Engadget, the new update is a minor affair and was only released due to security measures.
The update should also be available OTA so if you are using a Nexus One now, look out for the notification over the weekend. If you find any hidden features after installing FRF91, be sure to leave us a comment below.

HTC Hero 2.1 Update – Patience is a virtue
Jun 28th
HTC Hero 2.1 Update – Patience is a virtue: “
HTC Hero owners will probably know the story by now. The handset runs Android 1.5 under the pretty HTC Sense UI but, for many months, we’ve all waited patiently for the 2.1 update. It’s available in the USA for the Sprint Hero and if you’re in Taiwan you can get it too. Here in Europe we recently saw a ‘pre 2.1 update‘ to get the handset ready for the jump, but there’s still no sign of the actual official update itself.
Today is June 28th, and we’ve been told that the 2.1 update will arrive ‘towards the end of the month’. In theory this means that the update should be available either today, tomorrow or Wednesday. Like a World Cup win, we’ll have to wait a little longer, but don’t forget that even when it does arrive, you’ll still have to wait for the network branded devices to be updated.

More confusing information on updates for HTC Magic/Sapphire/Ion/HT-03a/MyTouch 3G
Jun 18th
I give up.
It will come when it comes to whom it comes, and not a second sooner. I had figured that everyone was waiting on the goods from the maker, but now I am not so sure how much the carriers are involved in this process.
Rogers of Canada had indicated their version of this handset would get an update to Eclair this summer. The Rogers version uses the “32a” board (288 MB RAM). Most other versions use the “32b” board (192 MB RAM), including the Ion and ht-03a.
Now two new developments: Apparently Android 2.2 “Froyo” is officially coming to all the gazzilion T-mobile my Touch versions, which include both 32a and 32b boards (the one with the separate audio jack is 32a), with the “no phone left behind (except for the G1)” campaign. (In fairness, the new Android versions simply won’t fit on the G1 without installing the Danger SPL, which frees up more nand space for the ROM by removing the /cache partition used (asfaik) for receiving OTA updates).
In addition, Vodafone is also hinting, in a very strange way
Google Grants Nexus One New Upgrade Subsidy Google Nexus One Available for $279 from T-Mobile
Jun 17th
Google has sold just around $20,000 Nexus One phones in its opening
week. We expected a lot more phones to be sold, didn t we? The number
might have been affected by the unexpected 3G issues as well as by the
prices asked by Google and T-Mobile for the handset.
As you recall, Google and T-Mobile charged differently their customers.
Those people that didn t want a new contract had to pay $529 for the off
contract version of the phone. New customers were qualifying for the $179 p
rice when signing a new two-year agreement and thus they were getting
the full subsidy.
And customers that were upgrading their phones had to pay either $279,
in case they didn t have any data plans, or $379, in case they did. As
you expect, a lot of people have considered upgrading to the Nexus One
but not everyone acted on that first impulse.
Maybe now it s a good time to rethink everything as Google and T-Mobile
are changing their upgrade subsidy policy. Everyone that s ready to
upgrade to the Nexus One, regardless of their current data plans, will
only have to pay $279 for the device. That s great news but I have more.
Those of you that have already paid $379 for the handset are entitled to
receiving a $100 refund from Google. Well isn t that nice?
Is Google trying to sell more Nexus One phones? Is it trying to improve
its image after the whole 3G support issue with the device? Whatever its
reasons are, I know that some people will be happy to pay less for the
handset.
Those of you that are not exactly to upgrade yet should wait a little
while longer as MWC is only a month away. And, from what we ve seen
these last couple of months, one thing is certain: Android will be a hot
topic at MWC 2010 and we expect various manufacturers to showcase new
Android handsets soon. Some of these phones might be even better than
the Nexus One but we ll tell you all about them in a few weeks.
Android 2.1 now available for the Sprint HTC Hero
May 20th

At long last, the much anticipated Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero has been released to the public. For those not already rocking a rooted, updated device, this carrier-sanctioned update will bring your handset into the 21st century with Android 2.1, an updated Sense UI, and a few minor bug fixes. If you can stand the wait, the update should be pushed out to your handset in the upcoming days. For those who lack patience, when the new OS finally goes live on Sprint’s website, it can be downloaded and installed manually following the directions on Sprint’s support page. Enjoy that delicious eclair!
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
