Coderless Apps, the Android Version

Lambda-the-ultimate has highlighting App Inventor, a tool for developing Android apps. The claims are impressive to say the least:

You can build just about any app you can imagine with App Inventor. …

To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app’s behavior.

This is the classic you-can-write-software-without-programming model which comes up every few years, if not more often.

I’m still not buying it.

Programming is a lot like writing in that there are two pretty distinct stages. First, you need to understand basic syntax so you can be understood. In the case of programming, you need to learn where to put all those curly braces or parenthesis, so the computer can parse your code. In the case of writing, you need to learn spelling and punctuation so that people can parse your text.

The second stage involves learning to write or code well. That is, how do you solve a problem, or write a story, in an efficient and elegant manner.

The first stage may seem tricky, but it’s really the second stage that one spends years mastering.

To write software, like writing a novel or a blog entry, you’re going to have to master both of the above stages to some degree.

I’ll give you that App Inventor may make learning the first stage easier. Heck, it may cause the first stage to disappear almost entirely. But the second stage – learning how to problem solve in an efficient manner, that’s still going to be required.

I could be cynical, and say that App Inventor is going to be a flop, and that to write software requires learning to think in a new way. Just like learning to write or paint requires a new thinking model as well. But, I’d rather be more optimistic.

If have success with App Inventor, it’s not because no programming experience is required. Nope, it’s because you’ve actually become a programmer. Congrats.

Android applications in the Android Market Engagement 100,000

The graph speaks for itself. According to a site that monitors the application of AndroLib.com Android, Android Market now offers users more than 90,000 applications, and with growth memungkan six-digit number at the end ublan. This will reach a milestone on the second year. A year ago, the number of applications under Android 10 000.

We’ll see how far the development of Android applications in the future and of course not all applications are good or qualified. But for about the amount, try to compare with the number of iPhone applications in Apple AppStore that reached 222 thousand today.

droid-eris (or driod incredible), I need one. And blackberry storm, you suck!

I would gladly love to bring either one of these (droid eris or droid incredible) home….without having to pay $500+ or selling my soul to Verizon (any more than I already have). You see, I have a Balckberry Storm and it SUCKS!!! I hate it. If you have had one, you probably feel my pain. I don’t think I have ever hated a phone so much in all the years I have had cell phones. The Storm has me searching the web for new phones on the cheap feeling like I am dirty. I hate that the touch screen sticks and apps freeze and I am constantly popping out the battery to restart it. I have called Verizon, I have begged and pleaded (and maybe cried once-whatever, I am sure everyone’s done it) for the ability to get a different phone–right, I might have better luck trying to get BP to clean up that oil spill right quick.
I thought I heard Verizon was having a buy one get one on the Eris….anyone getting an Eris that doesn’t need the second one? Or anyone want to give me an Incredible to try out? Anyone? Anyone? Can you hear me now?

Sign your Android applications for release

The process of application signing can be very confusing for new developers. But, once you have done it 2-3 times, it will be more like a chore for you after that. It’s not very complicated at all. So, here are the steps that you need to follow.

Note: If you already have a self-signed certificate/keystore, skip to step 2(b):

Step 1: Right click on the Android project. From the context menu, select, Android Tools -> Export Signed application package. In the dialog that will open, you will see the name of your project. If you have selected the wrong project, here is a chance to correct yourself. Click on “Next”.
